OVERVIEW & HIGHLIGHTS

What Makes the Annapurna Base Camp Trek Unforgettable?

The Annapurna Base Camp trek is a 7-day teahouse trek from Pokhara to 4,130 m (13,550 ft), inside a ring of peaks led by Annapurna I (8,091 m), the world's 10th-highest mountain. The route starts at Jhinu Danda and climbs the Modi Khola valley via Chhomrong, Dovan and Machhapuchhre Base Camp. The grade is moderate, with no technical climbing.

Most of the trail is stone steps, through Gurung and Magar villages, terraced fields and then rhododendron and bamboo forest. Above Deurali, the valley narrows between Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhre and opens into the Annapurna Sanctuary. The descent takes two days, with a night beside the Jhinu Danda hot springs before the jeep back to Pokhara.

Every trekker needs an ACAP permit (NPR 3,000 for foreign nationals) and a government-licensed guide, and both are included in the package. Prices start at USD 350 per person for groups of 15 or more and USD 550 for a solo trekker. Jeep transfers, twin-share teahouse rooms and three meals a day are also included.

10 Reasons to Choose the 7-Day ABC Trek

  • Two base camps in one trek: Machhapuchhre Base Camp (3,700 m / 12,140 ft) and Annapurna Base Camp (4,130 m / 13,550 ft).
  • Gurung villages at Chhomrong and Sinuwa, and the German Bakery in Chhomrong.
  • Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre, Hiunchuli and Gangapurna from close range at ABC.
  • Glacier country above MBC: moraines, sedimentary and metamorphic rock.
  • Village life in Chhomrong and Sinuwa, and in Ghandruk on the alternative route.
  • A soak in the natural hot springs at Jhinu Danda on Day 6, when tired legs need it most.
  • The walk from MBC to ABC: 2.9 km across open moraine with Annapurna I straight ahead.
  • Terraced rice fields low down, bamboo and rhododendron forest in the middle, grass and rock at the top.
  • Wildlife of the Annapurna Conservation Area, including langur monkeys, Himalayan tahr and the danphe (Himalayan monal).
  • A short-trip fit: 7 days from Pokhara, with no domestic flight and no high pass.

Day 1

Drive Pokhara to Jhinu Danda and Trek to Chhomrong

HIGHEST ALT. 2,170 m / 7,119 ft
DURATION 3 hrs
Distance
DISTANCE ~ 2 km

Day 1 starts with a 3-hour jeep drive from Pokhara to Jhinu Danda, with a permit check at the ACAP checkpoint in Birethanti, next to Nayapul. The walk begins by crossing the 287-metre suspension bridge over the Kimrong Khola. A long stone staircase then climbs for about 3 hours to Chhomrong, a Gurung village facing Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre.

The night is spent in a Chhomrong lodge, and many rooms look straight at the mountains. The day gains about 1,350 m from Pokhara, but a sleeping altitude of 2,170 m is still low enough for most people to feel fine. Drink plenty of water on the climb, because the steps are steep and catch the afternoon sun.

Day 2

Chhomrong to Dovan

HIGHEST ALT. 2,520 m / 8,268 ft
DURATION 5–7 hrs
Distance
DISTANCE 8.6 km

Day 2 is 8.6 km to Dovan and takes 5 to 7 hours, with a steep drop and climb early on. Ten minutes of steps lead to the ACAP check post above Chhomrong, where permits are checked again. The trail then descends for about an hour to the Chhomrong Khola bridge and climbs straight back up to Upper Sinuwa.

Blooming Rhododendrons forestPhoto: Blooming Rhododendrons forest between Upper Sinuwa and Bamboo

After Upper Sinuwa the path levels out through forest and past small waterfalls, and Machhapuchhre appears between the trees. Lunch is at Bamboo, then about 2 more hours through bamboo thickets and over rocky slopes lead to Dovan (2,520 m / 8,268 ft). Dovan is a small cluster of lodges in the forest rather than a village.

Day 3

Dovan to Machhapuchhre Base Camp (MBC)

HIGHEST ALT. 3,700 m / 12,140 ft
DURATION 6-7 hrs
Distance
DISTANCE 13 km

Day 3 is the longest and hardest day of the trek: 13 km, 6 to 7 hours and a gain of about 1,180 m. It starts early. Between Dovan and Himalaya, a small temple called Pujinam Baraha Mandir faces a waterfall that covers the whole cliff face. The tea stop is at Himalaya (2,920 m / 9,580 ft).

Hazy trail of Dovan en route ABC trekPhoto: Hazy trail of Dovan en route ABC trek

From Himalaya the trail climbs past Hinku Cave, an overhang that shepherds once used for shelter, to Deurali (3,230 m / 10,597 ft) for lunch. The stretch around Hinku Cave and Deurali is the main avalanche-prone section of the trek after heavy snow. Above Deurali the trees give way to grass and rock, and the valley starts to narrow.

About 2.5 hours after lunch, the valley narrows between Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhre and you reach Machhapuchhre Base Camp (3,700 m / 12,140 ft). Tonight's sleeping altitude is 1,180 m higher than last night, more than the usual acclimatisation guidance. Altitude symptoms often show up at night. If you wake with a headache or nausea, tell your guide straight away.

Day 4

Machhapuchhre Base Camp (MBC) to Annapurna Base Camp (ABC)

HIGHEST ALT. 4,130 m / 13,550 ft
DURATION 2–3 hrs
Distance
DISTANCE 2.9 km

Day 4 is a short morning: 2.9 km from MBC to Annapurna Base Camp (4,130 m / 13,550 ft), taking 2 to 2.5 hours. The rocky path is often under snow in spring and climbs gently across the moraine with Annapurna I straight ahead. The rest of the day is free at base camp, with the whole Sanctuary around you.

The ring of peaks includes Annapurna I (8,091 m / 26,545 ft), Annapurna South (7,219 m / 23,684 ft), Gangapurna (7,455 m / 24,459 ft), Machhapuchhre (6,993 m / 22,943 ft) and Hiunchuli (6,441 m / 21,132 ft). The full list is in the peak tables further down. Temperatures drop fast once the sun goes behind the peaks.

There is also a memorial to Park Young-Seok, a famous South Korean mountaineer who went missing on the south face of Annapurna I in October 2011.

Day 5

Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) to Dovan

HIGHEST ALT. 4,130 m / 13,550 ft
DURATION 6 hrs
Distance
DISTANCE 13 km

Day 5 starts before dawn, because sunrise at ABC lights the top of Annapurna I first and then spreads down the rest of the ring. After breakfast the trail goes back down through MBC, Deurali and Himalaya to Dovan (2,520 m / 8,268 ft). It is mostly downhill and takes about 6 hours, and your legs will feel the descent.

Day 6

Dovan to Jhinu Danda Hot Spring

HIGHEST ALT. 1,780 m / 5,840 ft
DURATION 6-7 hrs
Distance
DISTANCE 13 km

Day 6 drops through Bamboo, with a few short climbs, to Sinuwa for lunch. From Sinuwa the trail goes down to the Chhomrong Khola bridge and then climbs steeply back up into Chhomrong, the last real climb of the trek. From Chhomrong, stone stairs run all the way down to Jhinu Danda (1,780 m / 5,840 ft).

Suspension Bridge of Jhinu Danda.Photo: Suspension Bridge of Jhinu Danda.

The hot springs sit beside the Modi Khola, down a steep path below the village. After six days of stone steps, an hour in warm water does more for tired legs than anything else on the trip. The night is spent in a Jhinu Danda lodge, a short climb back up from the pools.

Day 7

Drive back from Siwai / Jhinu Danda to Pokhara

HIGHEST ALT. 1,780 m / 5,840 ft
DURATION 2 hrs
Distance
DISTANCE 4.4 km

Day 7 begins with an optional soak, then a 4.4 km walk of about 2 hours down to Siwai. Anyone who would rather skip the walk can take the jeep from Jhinu Danda. From Siwai the jeep takes about 2.5 hours to Pokhara, mostly on paved road, and permits are checked again at Birethanti on the way out.

The itinerary climbs from Pokhara (822 m) to Annapurna Base Camp (4,130 m) in four days and comes back down in three. Day 1 gains more than 1,300 m, but all of it below 2,200 m, where altitude is rarely a problem. The big step is Day 3, from Dovan to Machhapuchhre Base Camp, which gains 1,180 m.

Day 4 is short but high, ending at Annapurna Base Camp with the Annapurna range all around. On Day 5 the descent covers in one day what took two days to climb. Day 6 ends at the Jhinu Danda hot springs, and Day 7 returns to Pokhara by jeep from Siwai.

Alternate Itineraries: Starting from Nayapul or Kande

The 7-day trek can also start from Nayapul or Kande instead of Jhinu Danda. Both options add village walking on the first two days and join the main route at Chhomrong or Jhinu Danda. The upper part of the trek, from Dovan to Annapurna Base Camp, stays the same. Ask for either version when booking.

Starting from Nayapul

Day 1: Drive from Pokhara to Nayapul and trek to Ghandruk (6 - 7 hrs trek)
Day 1 is a drive of just over an hour from Pokhara to Nayapul, then 6 to 7 hours on foot to Ghandruk. The trail follows the Modi Khola through Birethanti, Syauli Bazaar and Kimche before the climb to the village. It covers about 15 km. Ghandruk is a large Gurung village with stone lanes.

Day 2: Ghandruk to Chhomrong (5–6 hrs trek)
Day 2 runs from Ghandruk to Chhomrong (2,170 m / 7,119 ft), about 10 km and 5 to 6 hours. The trail drops to the Kimrong Khola and climbs back up to Chhomrong, so it is not all downhill. The steps are steep and often wet. Take the descent slowly and place each foot firmly.

Day 3: Chhomrong to Dovan (6 - 7 hrs trek)
Day 3 goes from Chhomrong to Dovan in 6 to 7 hours. A steep track drops to the Chhomrong Khola, and a suspension bridge leads to the climb to Sinuwa for lunch. From Sinuwa the trail runs through bamboo forest to Bamboo village and follows the Modi Khola to Dovan for the night.

Day 4: Dovan to MBC (6 hrs trek)
Day 4 follows the Modi Khola from Dovan to Machhapuchhre Base Camp in about 6 hours. The trail climbs through forest to Hinku Cave and on to Deurali for lunch. After lunch, alpine scrub and grass lead up to MBC. This day gains more than 1,000 m, so walk slowly and drink often.

Day 5: MBC to ABC (2-3 hrs trek)
Day 5 is the short climb from MBC to Annapurna Base Camp, about 2.5 hours on a rocky path that is often snow-covered. In summer, alpine meadows line the trail. The afternoon is free to explore base camp and take photos. The night is spent at ABC, below the south face of Annapurna I.

Day 6: ABC to Bamboo( 6-7 hrs trek)
Day 6 is a long descent of almost 17 km from Annapurna Base Camp to Bamboo, taking 6 to 7 hours. The trail retraces the route past MBC, Hinku Cave and Dovan. It is well marked, and most of the day is downhill. Knees feel this day more than any other, so trekking poles help.

Day 7: Bamboo to Jhinu and drive to Pokhara (6 - 7 hrs trek and 2 hrs drive)
Day 7 starts on stone steps and crosses the suspension bridge over the Chhomrong Khola. From there the trail descends steeply to the Modi Khola and on to Jhinu Danda, a busier village than the others on the route. A jeep then drives back to Pokhara in about 2 hours.

Starting from Kande

Day 1: Drive from Pokhara to Kande and Kande to Landruk (1 hr drive and 5 - 6 hrs trek)
Day 1 is a one-hour drive of about 20 km from Pokhara to Kande, then 5 to 6 hours on foot. The trail climbs to Australian Camp (2,030 m), then passes Pothana and Deurali before dropping to Landruk. The day covers about 16 km.

Day 2: Landruk to Jhinu Danda (6 - 7 hrs trek)
Day 2 is a shorter day from Landruk to Jhinu Danda (1,780 m / 5,840 ft), about 9 km. The trail drops to the Modi Khola, crosses at New Bridge and follows the river to Jhinu Danda. The afternoon is free for the hot springs below the village.

Day 3: Jhinu Danda to Bamboo (6 - 7 hrs trek)
Day 3 starts with the long stone staircase from Jhinu Danda up to Chhomrong, then drops to the Chhomrong Khola suspension bridge. From the bridge, the trail climbs to Sinuwa and runs through forest via Kuldighar to Bamboo village. The day takes 6 to 7 hours, and most of it is on steps.

Day 4: Bamboo to Deurali (6 - 7 hrs)
Day 4 runs from Bamboo to Deurali in 6 to 7 hours. The first section through bamboo forest is steep, then the trail reaches Himalaya, where the valley widens and the trees thin out. One final steep climb leads to Deurali for the night. Sleeping at Deurali gives a gentler climb than stopping at MBC.

Day 5: Deurali to ABC (4 - 5 hrs)
Day 5 climbs gradually along the Modi Khola from Deurali to Annapurna Base Camp in 4 to 5 hours. Lunch is at Bagar, about 3 hours from Deurali. From Bagar it is about another hour to ABC, where the whole Annapurna range comes into view. The night is spent at base camp.

Day 6: ABC to Dovan (6 - 7 hrs)
Day 6 is the descent from Annapurna Base Camp to Dovan, taking 6 to 7 hours. After sunrise and breakfast at base camp, the trail retraces the route down past MBC, Deurali and Himalaya. It is mostly downhill but long. The night is spent at Dovan, back in the forest.

Day 7: Dovan to Jhinu Danda to Matque and drive to Pokhara (5 - 6 hrs and 2 hrs drive)
Day 7 goes from Dovan to Chhomrong for lunch, crossing a suspension bridge and passing through forest on the way. From Chhomrong the stairs lead down to Jhinu Danda, where a jeep waits for the drive back to Pokhara. The walk takes 5 to 6 hours and the drive about 2 hours.

These are the standard start and finish points, but the trek also connects with the Khopra Danda, Hidden Lake and Mardi Himal treks and other routes in the Annapurna region. Any combination can be arranged from Pokhara. Ask the team for a variation when you enquire, and the itinerary will be adjusted to your dates.

Best Time to Visit Annapurna Base Camp

The best months for the Annapurna Base Camp trek are October and November, followed by March to May. Autumn brings the clearest mountain views and the most stable weather. Spring brings rhododendrons in flower, warmer days and more afternoon cloud. The monsoon and deep winter are possible, but both make the trail harder.

Spring Season

Spring runs from March to May and is the second-best season for ABC. The rhododendron forest between Sinuwa and Deurali flowers in March and April, and there is usually still snow around base camp. Cloud tends to build after midday, so mornings are the best time for views. Days are warm below Deurali.

Autumn Season

Autumn, from September to November, is the main trekking season on this route. Skies are clearest in October and November, days are warm, and nights at MBC and ABC drop below freezing. Dashain and Tihar fall in these months. October is the busiest month on the trail, so lodges fill up early.

Summer Season

Summer, from June to August, is the monsoon. Expect rain most days, muddy stone steps, leeches between about 2,000 m and 3,000 m, and cloud over the peaks. The trail is quiet and the forest is at its greenest. For a drier trek in these months, Upper Mustang sits in the rain shadow north of the Himalaya.

Winter Season

Winter runs from December to February and suits experienced trekkers with flexible dates. Early December is cold but often clear, and departures still run then. From late December to February, snow can lie above Deurali, and the section around Hinku Cave can become avalanche-prone after heavy snowfall. A warm sleeping bag is essential.

Accommodation & Meals on the Trek

The ABC trek is a "teahouse trek," meaning you stay in small, locally-run mountain lodges with strict guidelines from Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP).

Accommodation Standard

Rooms are generally twin-sharing with basic wooden beds and foam mattresses. In lower villages like Chhomrong, you may find lodges with attached bathrooms and hot showers. However, as you move higher toward Deurali and ABC, facilities become more communal, and hot water is often provided in buckets for an extra fee.

Sneak peak inside the teahouse of ABC trekPhoto: Sneak peek inside the teahouse of ABC trek

Meals Available

Guides keep an eye on kitchen standards, because a stomach upset on a 7-day trek costs more than a day. Dal bhat with unlimited refills is the safest and best-value meal on the trail. Pasta, pancakes, porridge and even pizza are available in most lodges. Hot water for drinking is sold at every stop.

Experience Local Life at ABC Trek

Homestays are possible on the lower part of the trek, in villages such as Ghandruk, Chhomrong and Sinuwa. A homestay night means sleeping in a family house and eating what the family eats. Higher up there are only lodges. Ask for a homestay night when booking, and the team will arrange it.

How Difficult is the Annapurna Base Camp Trek?

Annapurna Base Camp is a moderate trek with no technical climbing and no high pass. You walk 5 to 7 hours a day for six days in a row. The stone steps wear people out more than the altitude does, and most of the steps between Jhinu Danda, Chhomrong and Sinuwa are climbed twice.

ABC trail (mountain and forest trail)Photo: ABC trail (mountain and forest trail)

The longest day is Day 3, from Dovan to Machhapuchhre Base Camp: 13 km, 6 to 7 hours and a gain of about 1,180 m. The highest is Day 4, a 2.9 km walk from MBC to ABC. Fit beginners finish the trek regularly. One guest called it “challenging but doable for those who are in reasonable condition”.

A porter makes the biggest difference on a first trek, because carrying only a daypack keeps your knees fresh for the descents. A porter typically costs around USD 25–30 per day. Spring and autumn are the easiest seasons. Winter adds snow and ice above Deurali, and the monsoon brings slippery steps, leeches and avalanche risk around Hinku Cave.

Altitude & Safety — Avoiding Altitude Sickness

Annapurna Base Camp sits at 4,130 m (13,550 ft), where each breath holds roughly 40% less oxygen than at sea level. Mild symptoms, such as a headache or a poor night's sleep, are common above 3,000 m. Serious altitude sickness is avoidable with the right pace and early reporting of symptoms.

Watch for the early symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS): headache, nausea, dizziness, loss of appetite, and difficulty sleeping. These usually appear above 3,000 m.

The usual guidance above 3,000 m is to sleep no more than about 500 m higher than the night before. The 7-day itinerary breaks that rule on one day. Day 3 goes from Dovan (2,520 m) to Machhapuchhre Base Camp (3,700 m), a gain of 1,180 m. The next night, at ABC, is only 430 m higher.

Guides check every trekker's oxygen level with a pulse oximeter every day, and anyone with worsening symptoms goes down rather than up. Drink 3 to 4 litres of water a day, skip alcohol on the upper trail and keep eating even when your appetite drops. Anyone who has had altitude problems before should talk to the Pokhara team before booking.

The section between Hinku Cave and Deurali, below Machhapuchhre Base Camp, is prone to avalanches, especially in winter and early spring. An avalanche near Deurali (about 3,230 m) in January 2020 left trekkers and guides missing. Guides cross this stretch early in the morning and follow local advice on closures.

Permits for the Annapurna Base Camp Trek (2026 ACAP)

The Annapurna Base Camp trek needs only one permit in 2026: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). It costs NPR 3,000 for foreign nationals and NPR 1,000 for SAARC nationals, and double that if bought at a checkpoint. The TIMS card is not currently required on this route. The ACAP permit is included in every package on this page.

ABC Trek Permits.

The ACAP must be issued online through a government-registered trekking agency, so individual trekkers cannot buy it themselves. North Nepal Travel & Trek issues it from a passport copy and a digital passport photo, with no printed photos needed. Carry the permit on your phone or on paper. It is checked at Birethanti and again above Chhomrong.

Is a Licensed Guide Mandatory?

Yes, a licensed guide is mandatory for the Annapurna Base Camp trek. Since 1 April 2023, Nepal Tourism Board rules require foreign trekkers in national parks and conservation areas to trek with a government-licensed guide arranged through a registered agency. The package includes a licensed, English-speaking guide for all 7 days.

ABC vs Everest Base Camp — Which Should You Choose?

If you want big mountain scenery on a shorter, gentler, more affordable trek, choose Annapurna Base Camp (ABC). If your goal is to stand at the foot of the world's highest peak and you have more time and budget, choose Everest Base Camp (EBC).

ABC is the better pick for first-time trekkers and those short on time, while EBC is the higher, longer, and more demanding bucket-list classic. Here is how they compare:

Factor Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Everest Base Camp (EBC)
Max altitude 4,130 m (13,550 ft) 5,364 m (17,598 ft)
Typical duration 7 days from Pokhara 12–14 days
Difficulty Moderate Moderate to strenuous
Cost Lower (no flights needed) Higher (Lukla flights add cost)
Scenery 360° amphitheatre of Annapurna peaks Khumbu glacier & Everest views
Best for Fit beginners, limited time Experienced trekkers, bucket-list goal

What to Pack for the Annapurna Base Camp Trek

Pack light but warm. The two essentials are good broken-in hiking boots and a sleeping bag rated to roughly -10°C, since teahouse nights near ABC get cold. A practical core list:

  • Layered clothing: base layers, a fleece, and a warm down jacket
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Comfortable, broken-in hiking boots and trekking socks
  • Trekking poles (a real help on the stone steps)
  • Sleeping bag (around -10°C rating)
  • Sun hat, warm hat, gloves, sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen
  • Reusable water bottle and water purification tablets
  • Basic first-aid kit and any personal medication
  • Headlamp, power bank, and quick-dry towel

To prepare physically, build up your cardio and leg strength in the 6–8 weeks before the trek with hikes, stair climbing, and long walks.

Take the trekking gear according to the number of days you will spend in the Himalayas — while packing too little is dangerous, packing too much will slow you down and can be risky, especially in the high mountains. See our detailed packing list for the full rundown.

Location & Geography of the ABC Trek

Annapurna Base Camp sits in the Annapurna Sanctuary, a high glacial basin in Kaski District inside the Annapurna Conservation Area. The only way in on foot is up the Modi Khola gorge. The route links easily with the Mardi Himal, Ghorepani Poon Hill and Khopra Ridge treks, so ABC is simple to extend.

For the rocks and glaciers of the Sanctuary, read The Landscape and Geology of the Annapurna Base Camp.

Annapurna Base Camp photo with guest and team.Photo: Our guest and team posing for a photo at Annapurna Base Camp (4,130 m).

The trek used to start at Nayapul, but the road now reaches Jhinu Danda and Siwai, which saves time on both ends. The ACAP checkpoint is still at Birethanti, so permits are checked there on the drive in. Kande and Ghandruk remain possible starting points for a longer version of the trek.

People, Culture, and Culinary Delights of the 7-day ABC Trek

The 7-day Annapurna Base Camp trek route leads trekkers through a variety of traditional communities. The lower altitudes are home to the Brahmins and Chhetris, and you can witness the semi-traditional friendly people starting right from the starting points like Jhinu Danda or Nayapul. However, if you took the alternative Annapurna Base Camp trek 7-day itinerary, then you can experience the Brahmins and Chhetris in Kande, but also a rich Gurung community in Ghandruk. These locals balance their traditional way of life and are known for their warmth and hospitality.

Photo: Traditional stone-made houses at Ghandruk Village of the Annapurna region

During the ABC trek, you can explore Buddhist monasteries and Hindu temples as well, and this is where you can directly engage with the friendly residents of traditional villages.

The flavors of the Nepal Annapurna Base Camp Trek mirror those of Pokhara, or you can say most households of Pokhara are filled with the flavors of the Annapurna Region. Annapurna History: The Story Behind the Name

It may be hard to believe, but the Nepal Annapurna base camp trek was a pilgrimage trek a long time ago. This trek leads into the Annapurna Sanctuary, a holy place for Hindus and Buddhists. Pilgrims used to trek through the sanctuary to offer their thanks and receive their blessing from the Annapurna Mata.

The Annapurna Mata is a form of the goddess Parvati, where “Anna” means Food and “Purna” means filled, representing that she is the goddess of food and nourishment. Annapurna can be roughly translated as filled with food or nourished with food.

A simple fact is that most of the agricultural fields and lands located at lower elevations depend on the streams from the Annapurna range as their source of irrigation. This also shows why Annapurna is known as the provider of food and nourishment.

Trekking History in the Annapurna Region

Colonel Jimmy Roberts, also known as the "father of trekking in Nepal", started the first guided trekking tour in Nepal as an agency. He registered Mountain Travel and started his business of managing trekking tours all over Nepal.

Colonel Jimmy RobertsPhoto: Colonel Jimmy Roberts (Source)

In the mid-1950s, he led the trek to Annapurna Sanctuary, which lasted a month. Slowly, trekking in the Annapurna region was booming, and the Nepalese government also began promoting trekking in the early 1960s. Little by little, the efforts piled up, and camping changed to Tea house accommodations, basic facilities started being available, and the trekkers increased, making the Annapurna region one of the most visited trekking destinations in the world.

Mt. Annapurna Expedition History

Annapurna I is known as one of the most deadly peaks in the world; however, it was the first peak over 8,000 m | 26,200 ft to be climbed. The French Annapurna expedition led by Maurice Herzog reached the Annapurna I summit on the 3rd of June, 1950.

The first ascent was made from the north side, the area now reached on the North Annapurna Base Camp trek, and the team climbed without supplemental oxygen. Twenty years later, Chris Bonington's British expedition made the first ascent of the south face above today's Annapurna Base Camp. Dougal Haston and Don Whillans reached the summit on 27 May 1970.

Picturesque Points Along the ABC Trek Route

The most scenic section of the trek is the 2.9 km from Machhapuchhre Base Camp to Annapurna Base Camp, with snow peaks on every side. The air is thin and cold here, so walk slowly. The best light comes at sunrise, when the sun reaches the top of Annapurna I first.

Amazing host - Mohan, Awesome guide - Bipin and very supportive porter Basanta - provided great support to us in our 7 day trek to Annapurna Base Camp. From booking the rooms in Kathmandu to booking to and fro flight from Pokhara to Kathmandu and everything during the trek was arranged very nicely. Amazing ABC Trek, responsible tour guide

We went to Pokhara in November 2019 for a visit and decided to book a trip to ABC with North Nepal Travels & Treks. Our guide was Neeraj, who was very thoughtful and took care of all our needs. He was knowledgeable of the surrounding mountains and Nepali traditions. The porter was also very helpful and nice. Both of them were very friendly so that 6 days of trekking with them were very enjoyable. Thank you so much for the memorable trip.

Highly recommend to all friends!

Kudos to North Nepal Tours

I had the most amazing experience with my siblings, recently completing the ABC trek. The trek was organized by Mohan Raj Bhandari if North Nepal Tours. We had a wonderful team of sherpas and a guide who ensured that we were comfortable and enjoyed our trek. Mohan personally co-ordinated and made us feel at home both during the Trek and our stay at Pokhara. Mohan has been very patient and professional in handling and responding to all our queries before and during the trek. Grateful for making our experience a memorable one.

Best Trek company on Nepal!

I am 59 and have some arthritis, I have always wanted to do a trek in the Himalayas. I did a lot of research and Niraj Adhikari from North Nepal Travel & Trek put together a trek to Annapurna Base Camp that covered all my requirements, I completed this trek on 22 September 2023. Niraj made sure that everything I wanted to do was included but also made sure that I would be able to achieve my goals and was not overstretched.

Niraj looked after all my requirements from being picked up at Kathmandu and Pokhara airports, hotel accommodation before and after the trek (at the same prices if I had done it myself), and of course the trek, the experience was personal, and he was in touch throughout to make sure I was ok. My guide was the most amazing person, Divas Gurung.

He was experienced and aware of my restrictions, we did a 7-day trek very easily, and at my pace, I was never rushed, and I always felt safe. It was the most amazing experience; Divas gave me a brilliant commentary of the area and the local people that made my trek very special. The tea houses and the food were better that expected.

I would not go past North Nepal Travel & Trek, they made sure my trek was exceptional and Divas is the best guide you could hope for! He also takes great photos and tells interesting local stories. If you want to do a trek that is safe and well organised with a brilliant guide, contact Niraj at North Nepal Travel & Trek. I am already planning my next trek with Niraj and Divas.

Annapurna Base Camp Trek

Sep 2023 • Couples

We recently did the Annapurna Base Camp trek with North Nepal Travels & Treks. Their services were really good before, during and after the trekking. They sent us all the information needed and answered the doubts we had. In the end, the team asked us what we enjoyed and what we didn’t.

The trek lasted 7 days with accommodation and meals included. Our guide, Buddhiman, took care of us and told us many recommendations. For instance, what to eat or not to eat in the mountains and which places to see. He also knew what to do in certain moments thanks to his great experience. As well, he was flexible on where to sleep according to our rhythm and with what we needed.

Overall, it was a nice experience and we had amazing views of the Annapurna region.

Exceptional Annapurna Base Camp Trek

My experience with North Nepal Travel was exceptional. Their services were not only reasonably priced but also of outstanding quality. Niranjan, our guide, was particularly remarkable. His deep knowledge of the trek routes instilled confidence in us throughout our journey. His patience in addressing our queries was commendable.

During our short hike through the Australian Base Camp, Niranjan was not just a guide but a storyteller, enlightening us about the local people, culture, and villages. His encouragement was a constant source of motivation.

His advice and recommendations were invaluable, influencing us to modify our itinerary to make the most of our time in Pokhara.

I wholeheartedly recommend North Nepal Travel for anyone looking to explore the Pokhara region. Their trustworthiness, authenticity, and exceptional service quality set them apart. Niranjan's guidance has inspired us to undertake more challenging treks, and we eagerly anticipate returning to explore more of Pokhara's stunning landscapes.

A heartfelt thanks to Niranjan for his invaluable assistance and for making our trip unforgettable.

Excellent experience- highly recommend

We are so lucky to have picked North Nepal Travel and Treks for our trekking holiday in Nepal. The services provided surpassed our expectations in every way. Mohan was prompt to answer all our pre- trek enquiries, he created a flexible itinerary which really maximized our trekking experience, sorted out all our transportation (domestic flights, airport transfers, jeep to and from trail), provided a wealth of information and good advice for our entire time in Nepal.

The trek itself was amazing. Our fantastic guide Zeewan pointed out all the little wonderful things we would have missed on our own, always looking after our safety and wellbeing. He is fun, inspirational and a great photographer (we have so many beautiful photos!). The trek was at our pace and each day we arrived at a tea house to a room with the best views. We never had to wait for our meals even though the kitchen is so busy at peak season.

Zeewan brought us hot coffee while waiting for sunrise at ABC in the freezing cold. He took us on a local trail through millet farms with the most stunning views where we never met any other tourist and even happily ran down and up hundreds of steps to get us some fresh bananas. We have so many wonderful memories to cherish, thanks to this passionate and professional team at North Nepal. We look forward to come back to Nepal for another adventure with you.

Amazing ABC Trek

Oct 2024 • Couples

We had an amazing experience from our first contact with Mohan (the boss) North Nepal travels and Treks. Mohan was great with communications, caring, and he even took us out to dinner after the trek and coming to see us at our hotel before leaving Pokara that everything is ok.

We had absolutely fantastic time ABC 9 days hike with our guide Raj Rai and Porter Balaram . They went above and beyond to look after us, making sure all our needs are met. Our guide Raj is always available ( Thanks Raj for getting my water bottle from bushy steep slope (clumsy me) and knowledgeable with all our questions, always making sure we get the best room in all of our mountain lodges. Our Porter Balaram, who never failed to smile, always cheerful, entertain us all the time.

The Annapurna base camp (ABC); A 7-day Journey from Sub-Tropical to Alpine Wonder

The Annapurna base camp (7-day ABC): April 18- 24, 2025

Before our journey began, trekking in Nepal especially the Annapurna base camp (ABC) had been around among friends/ colleagues since years back. Due to some circumstances, this year meant to be it, well, some of us believed so. 😁 Followed to a few researches, we found the North Nepal Travels & Treks on Facebook with number of positive reviews and available itinerary suitable for our group….. We then decided to book our very first trek a 7-day ABC with NNT&T.

💚Emmy, Pooja, Yao -> Let’s goooooo ABC!!

It was a true rewarding and well-supported adventure. Hats off to the NNT&T team/ our guide Gopal Tamang Dhai (Mr.)! ⭐️✨💯
Our overall trekking journey was well-organized and enjoyable which offered a good balance of challenge~ scenic beauty and touch of local cultures, providing a memorable outdoor experience. “This trek is a symphony of changing ecosystems, cultures, and emotions. From the warm, forested trails of the lowlands to the stark, snowy amphitheater of the Annapurna Sanctuary, it’s an unforgettable adventure that showcases the raw beauty and diversity of Nepal.”

During the trek, each of us felt the challenge over changes of environment differently. However, we managed through as they were mild symptoms. We noted that trekking at high altitudes (often above 3,000 meters) can be tough. Acclimatization is critical to avoid altitude sickness, and thin air makes even short hikes strenuous… fortunately, we felt well-prepared through consistent communication with our guide Gopal. Safety protocols were well explained and maintained. We loved the support and care through some little tip for thin air environment practices such breathing techniques. Moreover, our guide managed group dynamics well, keeping morale high and adjusting plans when necessary.

Furthermore, one of the most enriching parts of the trek was exposure to local culture. Any interactions with villagers, traditional meals, and the chance to witness local customs added a deep layer of authenticity to the journey. Our guide was knowledgeable, professional, and approachable who provided clear information about the trail, environment, and local culture, which greatly enriched the experience.

So, thank you once again for an incredible experience in the Himalayas, NNT&T family! We look forward to having our upcoming adventures with you again soon.
For anyone out there, if you are looking around for your very first trek or perhaps second or third one in Nepal, why don’t check “The North Nepal Travels & Treks” out, and there your guide Gopal Tamang Dhai (Mr.) for an unforgettable adventure and immersive nature experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

General Information

Can the Annapurna Base Camp trek be combined with other treks?

Yes, ABC combines easily with other treks in the Annapurna region. Common combinations are Ghorepani Poon Hill, Ghandruk Village, Mardi Himal and Khopra Ridge. Adding Poon Hill turns it into the 9-day Annapurna Sanctuary Trek. The Annapurna Circuit is the one route it doesn't link with directly.

Is Annapurna Base Camp harder than Everest Base Camp or the Annapurna Circuit?

ABC is easier than both. Everest Base Camp reaches 5,364 m (17,598 ft) and takes 12 to 14 days. The Annapurna Circuit crosses the Thorong La at about 5,416 m. ABC tops out at 4,130 m in 7 days, though its stone steps are hard on the legs.

How many days does the Annapurna Base Camp trek take?

The standard itinerary takes 7 days from Pokhara. The 5-day Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek gains height quickly and suits experienced hikers who can walk 7 to 8 hours a day. Adding Ghorepani Poon Hill makes the 9-day Annapurna Sanctuary Trek. Allow extra time for travel between Kathmandu and Pokhara.

How far do you walk each day on the Annapurna Base Camp trek?

Daily walking distances on the 7-day itinerary range from about 2 km (1.2 miles) on Day 1 to 13 km (8.1 miles) on Days 3, 5 and 6. Each day's distance is in the itinerary. The jeep ride to and from Pokhara comes on top. Starting from Nayapul or Kande adds more walking and at least one extra day.

Where are the hot springs on the Annapurna Base Camp trek?

The hot springs are at Jhinu Danda (1,780 m / 5,840 ft), beside the Modi Khola, down a steep path below the village. On this itinerary the night of Day 6 is spent at Jhinu Danda. That allows a soak after the long descent and another on the morning of Day 7, before the walk out to Siwai.

How high is Annapurna Base Camp?

Annapurna Base Camp is at 4,130 m (13,550 ft). The night before, trekkers sleep at Machhapuchhre Base Camp, 3,700 m (12,140 ft). From Pokhara (about 822 m), the net gain is roughly 3,300 m. The real climbing total is higher, because the trail drops to river crossings and climbs back out.

5. What is the itinerary for a 10-day Annapurna Base Camp trek?
  • Day 1: Pokhara to Kande (drive) and trek to Landruk
  • Day 2: Landruk to Chhomrong
  • Day 3: Chhomrong to Dovan
  • Day 4: Dovan to Deurali
  • Day 5: Deurali to Machhapuchhre Base Camp
  • Day 6: Machhapuchhre Base Camp to Annapurna Base Camp
  • Day 7: Annapurna Base Camp to Bamboo
  • Day 8: Bamboo to Chhomrong
  • Day 9: Chhomrong to Ghandruk
  • Day 10: Ghandruk to Pokhara

Packing Gear & Rental

1. What should I wear for a 7-day Annapurna Base Camp trek?

Your clothing should be based on the ongoing season. For example, winter requires more warmth so you need to dress accordingly, with warm down jackets, thick gloves, beanies, etc. while summer requires you to wear breathable clothes that are preferably thin. Autumn is similar to summer so, you can wear the same type of clothing but it can be a little chilly during dusk and dawn so bring a jacket with you.

Lastly, for spring, you need to dress as you would in winter. This is because of the snowfall that happens during this season.

2. Is a sleeping bag necessary for the Annapurna Base Camp trek?

Yes, a sleeping bag is absolutely necessary for this trek, especially during the months of winter, spring, and autumn. The tea houses will provide you with blankets but they may not be enough to block the cold.

What gear is needed for the ABC trek, and can it be rented?

The essentials are layered clothing with a warm down jacket, waterproofs, broken-in boots, a sleeping bag rated to about -10°C, a headlamp and a power bank. A sleeping bag and trekking poles are included if needed, to return after the trek. Down jackets can be rented in Pokhara. The full list is on the trekking gear list for Nepal.

4. Are down jackets and sleeping bags available for rent?

Yes, we offer sleeping bags and down jackets on rent to tackle the cold temp of Mt Annapurna. Similar to other Himalayan treks, the Annapurna Himalayan trek hits trekkers with snow and cold winds at higher elevations.

Will a porter carry my bag, and what goes in my daypack?

A porter is an optional extra on this package and carries the main luggage, usually one duffel bag shared between two trekkers. The daypack only needs to hold about 5 kg: water, snacks, layers, sunscreen and a camera. Extra luggage can be stored at the office in Pokhara while you trek.

6. What type of daypack is required?

A light daypack capable of carrying a maximum load of 5 kg is more than enough as you will just be carrying your water bottle, snacks, some energy bars, and your gadgets. For more travel information please go through our “Trek Preparation And Packing” section.

7. Will there be a place to store items/clothing not required for the trek?

Yes, we will store all your goods at our office store. This Annapurna Base Camp trekking does not require much gear so it’s understandable that you will leave some of your belongings with us.

8. Do we have to carry our gear ourselves?

Yes, you have to carry your gear yourselves unless you hire a porter. Our porters will take care of it for you. During the Annapurna trekking, you will have to use your trekking poles and when it’s not needed, our porter will carry it.

Payments & Extra Costs

How much does the Annapurna Base Camp trek cost?

The 7-day ABC trek costs USD 550 for one person, USD 480 each for two, USD 450 each for 3 to 6 and USD 400 each for 7 to 14. Groups of 15 to 25 pay USD 350 each. The price includes jeep transfers, a licensed guide, the ACAP permit, teahouse rooms and three meals a day.

How much should I tip my guide and porter?

Tipping is not compulsory, but guides and porters expect it. Most groups tip on the last evening of the trek. A common approach is to hand the tip over in person with a thank-you note. Tips are usually shared out separately for the guide and the porter.

How much does an Annapurna Base Camp helicopter tour cost?

A return helicopter flight to Annapurna Base Camp is priced per person, and the per-person rate is lower for a group of 4 to 5 than for 2 people or fewer. Current prices and flight times are on the Annapurna Base Camp Helicopter Tour page. Quotes for specific dates are available from the team.

Booking & Company Policies

What happens after I book the ABC trek?

Once the payment is received, the team in Pokhara starts arranging permits, lodges and transport. You get the final details before arrival, and your physical training can begin. The trek starts on the scheduled date, or you can arrive in Pokhara a day or two earlier. Last-minute bookings are also accepted.

Weather & Seasons

1. How is the Annapurna Base Camp trek in October?

October is the best time for this trek as it features stable weather, lovely mild temperatures, and clear skies. However, since it is the best time, it can get a little crowded.

What is the best month for the Annapurna Base Camp trek?

October and November give the clearest views and the most stable weather, though October is the busiest month. March to May is next best, with rhododendrons in flower and more afternoon cloud. June to August is monsoon, with rain, leeches and hidden peaks. January and February bring snow above Deurali.

Health & Safety

Can children do the Annapurna Base Camp trek?

Yes, children and older trekkers do complete this trek, but altitude sickness at 4,130 m can affect anyone regardless of age or fitness. Children can be slower to say they feel unwell, so the pace stays easy and guides check everyone's oxygen level daily. A doctor's check before booking is wise. Contact the team to plan a family trek.

2. How hard is Annapurna Base Camp Trek?

One of the best treks in the Annapurna Region, the Annapurna Base Camp trek is a moderate trek with fewer challenges. This moderate trek takes you to the base camp of the world’s 10th-highest peak, Mt. Annapurna (8091m/26,545ft). So, this moderate trek can easily be completed with good health and determination, even beginners can complete this trek safely.

Is the Annapurna Base Camp trek safe?

Yes, with a licensed guide and a sensible pace, the ABC trek is safe. The two real risks are altitude sickness above 3,000 m and avalanches around Hinku Cave and Deurali after heavy snow.
