Upper Mustang Trek - 14 Days
The 14-Day Upper Mustang Trek starts from Kathmandu via Pokhara & Jomsom into the trans-Himalaya...
OVERVIEW & HIGHLIGHTS
North Nepal Trek's one of the best destination - Khopra Ridge starts from Pokhara through the Annapurna Conservation Area (ACAP), following an off-the-beaten isolated route via the Gurung and Magar villages of Ghandruk and Swanta, through Rhododendron and Pine forests to Khopra Danda (3,660m / 12,007ft). A side trail leads to the sacred Khayer Lake (4,600m / 15,091ft), a revered Hindu pilgrimage site visited once a year.
The trek offers panoramic views of 20+ peaks including Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Annapurna I (8,091m), Annapurna South (7,219m), Annapurna II (7,937m), Nilgiri (7,061m), Gangapurna (7,455m), and Machhapuchhre (6,993m). ACAP permit (NPR 3,000/ ~$25) and licensed guide is mandatory.

Moreover, the rural villages, fast-flowing rivers, farmlands, and walking through the rhododendron forests add a natural touch along the trail. While thinking about the Khopra ridge trek, only the immense beauty of more than 20 Himalayas and the pristine trekking path come to mind, and nothing else. Milan Tamang, Assistant Trekking Guide
Khopra Ridge Trek route and pacing are drawn from years guiding the isolated trails of the Annapurna region. Mohan founded North Nepal Trek in 2015; since then, Milan Tamang has led multiple treks through Ghandruk, Tadapani, Dobato, and Khopra Ridge itself.
After breakfast at the teahouse, we trek toward Dobato, walk through the forest, and climb steep trails. Chances to witness wildlife increase during this trail, but the steep climb makes this day a bit harder. We take some breaks along the way and have our lunch at a seasonal tea house along the trekking trail. After about 6 hours of trekking, we'll reach Dobato, where we check in at the teahouse and then trek for 20 minutes uphill to a viewpoint known as Mulde viewpoint, 3637 meters, for a sunset.

The sunset and sunrise views over the Annapurna ranges and Machhapuchre look so surreal from here. People trek to Mulde Peak mostly for sunrise and sunset views, while you can witness the same view during the Khopra Ridge Trek. We trek to the Mulde Peak at sunset or spend the time till sunset while enjoying the views of the Annapurna range from here. Overnight stay in the Lodge at Dobato.
On the third day of our Khopra Ridge Trek, we trek towards the Mulde Peak for sunrise views, then breakfast at the lodge, and trek towards Chistibung. The trail toward Chistibung is filled with ridges; we descend and ascend the ridges and pass through the dense rhododendron forest. Wildlife can also be encountered during part of the trail; however, you will also pass some houses along the way.
We'll have lunch at one of the tea houses and trek towards Chistibung. The day is comparatively easy as we descend and ascend the trails to Chistibung; after 6-7 hours of trekking, we reach Chistibung. It is a small village inhabited by Gurung and Magar communities that offers a teahouse accommodation so that you can learn and experience some local culture here.
On the fourth day of our Khopra Danda Trek, we trek to Khopra Ridge. We start our day early as we plan to reach Khayer Lake and then return to Khopra Ridge; there is a long day ahead.
The trek from Chistibung to Khopra Ridge is on the ridges, so it is short but steep uphill; we reach Khopra Danda after 2.5 hours of trekking along Khopra Ridge. All the fatigue and tiredness go away as we enjoy the panoramic views of majestic mountains from here. The world's highest mountains, such as Annapurna South and Nilgiri, stand before your eyes, and Dhaulagiri stands right before you.
We trek toward Khayer Lake after enjoying the views from Khopra Danda, with the views of the Dhaulagiri ranges along the trail for the first hour. With many ascents and descents along the way, we trek the ridge for the next two hours. Situated between Mt Tukuche and Mt Nilgiri North, the world's deepest valley, Kaligandaki, can also be seen during this trial. The trail becomes chilly, and you will walk in open fields surrounded by barren mountains, which reveal that Khayer Lake is near. A small teahouse is here, so we can have lunch here with tea and snacks. The trail then ascends with steps up to Khayer Lake, and different symbols of temples and bells give us the idea of mythological stories regarding the area. As we reach the lake, the Annapurna South stands before you.
The lake holds significant religious importance, surrounded by prayer flags, bells, and a temple. Many pilgrims visit this highest point of the Khopra Ridge Khayer Lake trek in July to seek fulfillment of wishes with an animal sacrifice to Lord Shiva as a token of thanksgiving to fulfill their wishes.

We then trek down to Khopra Ridge, as there are no Lodges near Khayer Lake. It will take about 3.5 hours to reach Khopra Ridge as the trail descends, and we will enjoy sunset views at every step during the descent.

After yesterday's long trek, we start our day after you replenish your energy with breakfast and coffee. The trek is comparatively easy as we descend most of the way to Swanta village, which is about 9.6 kilometers/5.9 miles and takes 5 to 6 hours with a slow-paced walk.

We take lunch at Kharka, which is an hour's journey from the village of Chistibung. The path then ascends for some time and then descends, and you reach Swanta Village after 2-3 hours of walking. Swanta is a beautiful but lesser-known village with a majority of Magar inhabitants.

The day starts with a trail that leads you through the flat land, followed by the terrace field, and on the way, we cross the river on the suspension bridge. After 6 hours of mostly uphill path through the dense rhododendron forest, we reach Ghorepani. Ghorepani provides impressive views of Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna range. Overnight stay at Ghorepani.

Photo: View from Ghorepani
We start our day early without breakfast to reach Poonhill for sunrise. We reach Poonhill after trekking for 45 minutes or 1 hour at max, all the way through the stone staircase. From Poonhill, we enjoy the mesmerizing sunrise along the panoramic views of Fishtail Mountain, Annapurna Mountain, Nilgiri Mountain, and Dhaulagiri. The sunrise is so alluring that there is a separate trek for those who want to witness the sunrise itself, which is why we included the Poonhill in this Khopra Ridge Trek itinerary.

Photo: View from Poonhill
We then return to our lodge, following the same trails, and have our breakfast at the lodge. Then we trek all the way down to Hile. The trekking trail to Hile mostly descends, halfway through the forests and halfway along the stairs. It takes 4-5 hrs to reach Hile, and we have our lunch here before our journey to Pokhara. After lunch, we take a jeep from Hile to Pokhar, which takes a 2.5-hour drive along the off-road up to Nayapul. We exit after our permits get checked at Nayapul, and the road after Nayapul to Pokhara is mostly blacktopped.

Note:
Autumn Trail Alert: Dry, well-marked ridge trails and crisp days with cold nights are expected on the Khopra Ridge Trek this season. Village wifi is limited along the route, so plan accordingly, and look forward to warm stays in our community lodges.
North Nepal trekking team were good friends and advicter of my trekking tour. I did 9 days of adventures trekking to poon hill, kopra and annapurna abc. My most liked experience when look back to Nepal.
Thank you guys that you made my journey so special.
Traveling Asia for a couple of months we visited Nepal rather spontaneously. We knew we wanted to do a trek but had no idea where to go or what to do. After doing some research on the web we visited Mohan in his office in Pokhara. We had a rough idea of what we were looking for. We wanted to do a trek that wasn’t too crowded. Still, we wanted to go places where we could enjoy those amazing views of the Himalayas.
With the help of Mohan we figured out our personalized itinerary that would take us to Mohare Danda, Khopra Data and Muldai. After agreeing to do the trek he organized everything in the shortest of time so we could start the very next day. We had an amazing trek and the fantastic experiences will remain in our memories for a a lifetime.
Breathtaking sunrises at Khopra ridge and Muldai peak are just two of the many highlights we experienced.
Special praise goes out to Buddhiman though, our guide on this trek. We could not have asked for a better guide. Buddhiman took such great care of us, he was very attentive and thanks to his tremendous experience he knew what we could do and what would be to much for us. He made sure that throughout the trek we wouldn‘t miss anything. He led us to the most incredible view points and provided us with a lot of information. He also took best of care in regard of our culinary needs. He even stepped into the kitchen and helped preparing the meals for us. Beside being an exceptional guide Buddhiman is also a great entertainer. He has such an amazing humor and is man of many, many talents. At the same time Buddhiman is a very smart man and has such a profound knowledge about the mountains of Nepal, Nepali society and history. We learned so many things from him and are so grateful for everything he has shared with us. We look back to our trek with greatest of memories.
Mohan and Buddhiman you guys made this trek a 5 Star experience!!! Thank you so much. Thomas and Christian
Recently completed the Khopra Danda trek as a family of four with two young children (10 & 11) this has been my third trip to Nepal.
Mohan and his team were amazing, From the initial contact they assisted us to select an appropriate trek with the kids and have been amazing.
They organised hotels, transfers, guides, porters and permits for a truely no hassle, easy, holiday of a lifetime.
Raj, our guide, was the absolute best and I would highly recommend him. His knowledge of the mountains, culture and interaction with our kids has been first class.
For the first time in three visits to Nepal, we had a porter and Ashok was incredible. He was a delight to be around and took such good care of us and our children.
Cannot recommend North Nepal highly enough if you are considering trekking in Nepal,
I recently had the pleasure of embarking on a trekking adventure with North Nepal, and I'm thrilled to rate my experience a solid 5 out of 5 stars! From the initial planning stages to the triumphant return, the team at North Nepal was nothing short of exceptional. They skillfully advised me on creating an itinerary, handled all my bookings seamlessly, and provided me with a stellar trek leader and a diligent porter. Their flexibility really stood out; we were able to adjust our route and schedule based on the weather conditions. This thoughtful planning ensured that I had the best chances to witness the magnificent sunrises, a highlight I was eagerly looking forward to.The trek leader was a treasure trove of knowledge, enriching my journey with fascinating insights about the local area, its people, and the trek route. Every question was met with an informative response, making the experience not just a physical trek but a journey of learning and discovery. What truly set North Nepal apart was their unwavering commitment to go above and beyond in providing support throughout the trek. There wasn’t a single moment when I didn’t feel pampered—whether it was stepping in to host at tea houses when the service was slow or the kitchen was overwhelmed, nothing was too much trouble for them. This trek with North Nepal was not just a journey through stunning landscapes but an experience filled with care, learning, and unforgettable hospitality. I can't recommend them enough to anyone looking for a trekking company that treats you like family and ensures an incredible adventure in the beautiful terrains of Nepal.
We did the Khopra trek.
The North Nepal trek gave us perfect directions snd arranged our guide, Kulendra.
He was really friendly, organized and well educated about the mountains.
We recommend him without a doubt.
Itineraries are structured with gradual elevation gains to ensure proper acclimatization before reaching high-altitude points like Khopra Ridge (4,600 m) and Khayer Lake (4,500 m). Guides conduct daily health assessments for symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). If severe symptoms appear, standard protocol mandates immediate descent to lower elevations.
In cases of severe injury, acute altitude illness, or extreme weather conditions on the exposed ridgelines, emergency helicopter evacuation is coordinated directly through local rescue services. Evacuations are initiated promptly upon assessment by your guide in communication with our Pokhara and Kathmandu offices.
All trekkers must hold comprehensive travel insurance covering emergency medical treatment, high-altitude trekking (up to 5,000 m), and emergency helicopter rescue/evacuation. Insurance details must be submitted prior to the departure of the trek to streamline emergency logistics if required.
Secure the Khopra Ridge Trek for 2026/2027 before the seat gets fully booked.
The Khopra Ridge trek is a 7-day route in the Annapurna region that reaches Khopra Danda at 3,660m and, for those who add the day hike, the sacred Khayer Lake at 4,660m. It's a quieter, less-crowded alternative to the Annapurna Base Camp trek, passing through rhododendron forests, traditional Gurung, Magar, and Thakali villages, and ending with a Poon Hill sunrise. The route uses a mix of community lodges and teahouses rather than the busy standard teahouse trail.
The Khopra Ridge trek is moderate overall. Most days involve 5 to 6 hours of walking on well-defined trails through forests and villages. The hardest day is the hike from Chistibung to Khayer Lake at 4,660m, which is a steep, exposed climb that requires good fitness. The ridge walking sections also demand attention, as the path is narrow in places. With basic physical fitness and no serious medical conditions, most trekkers handle it well.
The Khopra Ridge trek is 7 days and 6 nights long, covering a total distance of about 55 km. The route starts with a drive from Pokhara to Ghandruk, loops through Khopra Danda and optionally Khayer Lake, passes through Ghorepani and Poon Hill, and ends at Nayapul with a jeep ride back to Pokhara.
The highest point depends on your itinerary. Khopra Danda itself sits at 3,660m. If you add the day hike to Khayer Lake, the sacred alpine lake with the Barah Temple on its banks, you reach 4,660m, which is the maximum altitude on this trek. We recommend including Khayer Lake if your fitness allows it, since it's the highlight of the route.
Yes, with care. We recommend a minimum age of around 8 for children, and on the ridge walking sections the path is narrow and exposed, so children must be supervised closely. Older adults who can walk 5 to 6 hours a day without serious underlying conditions manage the trek well, though the Khayer Lake day at 4,660m is demanding. We suggest checking with your doctor before booking, especially for the lake section. Tell us about your group and we'll advise honestly.
Yes. Because the Khopra Ridge trek sits in the Annapurna region and shares trail sections with Poon Hill and Ghandruk, it combines naturally with the Annapurna Base Camp trek, the Mardi Himal trek, or the Ghandruk Village trek. Your ACAP permit covers the entire Annapurna region, so you don't need a new one for the extension. Tell us how many days you have.
The Khopra Ridge trek is a circuit, so there's no alternative main route, but you can add worthwhile extensions. The Khayer Lake day hike (4,660m) is the main add-on and we recommend it. You can also extend through Ghorepani for the Poon Hill sunrise or add a night in a Swanta village homestay on the descent for an authentic cultural experience. We can adjust the itinerary to include any of these.
Khayer Lake is a sacred alpine lake at 4,660m, the ultimate destination of the Khopra Ridge trek. You reach it on the fourth day with a steep day hike from Chistibung, climbing through high-altitude terrain to the lake where the Barah Temple, an important Hindu shrine, sits on the banks. It's a demanding day but the views of Dhaulagiri and the surrounding peaks are worth the effort. You return to Khopra Ridge to sleep that night.
The Khopra Ridge trek is located in the Annapurna region of north-central Nepal, within the Annapurna Conservation Area spanning Myagdi and Kaski districts. The trail sits between the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, giving you views of over 20 Himalayan peaks including Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Annapurna I (8,091m), Annapurna South, Nilgiri, and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail).
The Khopra Ridge trek requires the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), which costs NPR 3,000 (about USD 25) and has been required since April 2023. Officials check both at entry points along the route. Because ACAP covers the entire Annapurna region, you can combine the Khopra trek with other Annapurna routes without buying a new permit. North Nepal Trek arranges both for you.
The Khopra Ridge trek uses a mix of standard teahouses on the lower sections and community lodges on the ridge itself. The community lodges are simpler and cheaper than teahouses but have fewer amenities. Food on the lower trail is varied, but once you're on the ridge and at Khopra Danda, expect mostly Nepali dishes: dal bhat, stir-fried vegetables, bread, roti, and eggs. Contemporary dishes like pasta, pizza, and sandwiches are unlikely up high. The businesses in this area are seasonal, so outside peak months some lodges close.
The Khopra Ridge trek is priced per person on a sliding scale: around USD 630 for one person, USD 525 each for two, USD 490 each for groups of 3 to 6, USD 465 each for 7 to 12, and USD 440 each for larger groups. The package includes community lodge and teahouse accommodation, three meals a day plus three cups of tea or coffee daily, a licensed English-speaking guide, ACAP permit, TIMS card, and all government taxes. Message us for a firm quote for your group and dates.
No prior trekking experience is required, though having some definitely helps. The Khopra Ridge trek is moderate, but you need to be physically fit and comfortable in cold conditions. Start training two to three weeks before the trek with cardio and endurance work, including hill walks or stair climbing with a loaded pack. If you're planning to include the Khayer Lake day hike at 4,660m, a higher level of fitness is recommended. Tell us your background and we'll advise.
The best seasons for the Khopra Ridge trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (October to November). Autumn offers the clearest skies, the driest conditions, and the best mountain visibility. Spring brings lush green vegetation and rhododendron blooms, along with the chance of snowfall at higher elevations. Weather in the Himalayan highlands can change quickly, so come prepared for shifting conditions regardless of season.
Yes, and they should be taken seriously. The ridge walking sections are narrow and exposed in places, requiring attention and care, and the day hike to Khayer Lake at 4,660m carries real altitude risk. Altitude sickness is possible at that height, and the trail to the lake is steep and demanding. Our guides monitor conditions, carry first-aid equipment, and know the route well. This is a safe trek when approached with proper preparation and an honest assessment of your fitness, but it is not risk-free.
The standard 7-day itinerary doesn't include a dedicated acclimatization day because the ascent profile is gradual up to Khopra Danda at 3,660m. However, the day hike to Khayer Lake at 4,660m is a significant altitude jump and should not be rushed. If you're feeling any altitude symptoms at Khopra Danda, we can adjust the plan. Listen to your body and tell your guide about any headache, nausea, or dizziness.
Treated or boiled water is available at teahouses and community lodges along the route, usually for a small charge. We recommend carrying a reusable bottle with purification tablets or a filter as a backup, especially on the higher sections where water sources are less reliable. Staying well hydrated helps prevent altitude symptoms. Your guide shows you the safest options at each stop.
If you need medical attention during the Khopra Ridge trek, your guide contacts emergency services and coordinates helicopter rescue to the nearest medical facility if required. This is why travel insurance covering helicopter evacuation is essential on this trek. Our guides carry first-aid equipment and maintain communication for emergencies throughout the route. The community lodges along the ridge have limited communication, so your guide is your primary point of contact for any emergency.
Average fitness is enough for the main Khopra Ridge trail, but prepare with two to three weeks of endurance training before the trek, focusing on cardio and leg strength, ideally including hill walks with a pack. The Khayer Lake day hike at 4,660m is more demanding and benefits from stronger preparation. You should be comfortable walking 5 to 6 hours a day on varied terrain. If you have any underlying conditions, check with your doctor first.
Pack trekking trousers or shorts, trekking shirts, a warm down jacket, waterproof shell, fleece, thermal base layers, gloves, a warm hat, sturdy trekking boots, a daypack, trekking poles, sunglasses, sunscreen, a headlamp, and a sleeping bag for the cooler community lodges. Bring a power bank since charging relies on solar power at the lodges and may cost extra. See our all-seasons packing guide (northnepaltrek.com/all-seasons-trek-packing-list) for the full breakdown.
From Pokhara, a jeep takes you to Ghandruk, the starting point of the trek, which is about a 3-hour drive. At the end of the trek you descend to Nayapul or Hile, where a jeep picks you up for the drive back to Pokhara. We arrange all transport as part of the package. If you're coming from Kathmandu, we can arrange a flight or road transfer to Pokhara.
No, a Khopra Danda helicopter landing tour is not possible at the moment.
Yes. The most significant is the Barah Temple, a Hindu shrine on the banks of Khayer Lake at 4,660m, where pilgrims trek to make offerings. Along the route you'll also pass through traditional Gurung, Magar, and Thakali villages with smaller shrines and prayer walls. A cultural homestay in Swanta village is available as an add-on for those who want a deeper community experience.
