Dhorpatan Trek with Gurja Khani: A Perfect Place for Hunting
The 10-day Dhorpatan Trek with Gurja Khani is an off-beaten-path adventure through western Nepal'...
OVERVIEW & HIGHLIGHTS
Upper Dolpo Trek is the ideal destination for anyone with a knack for trekking in an adventurous remote western part of Nepal and less crowded trails. Most of the places in the Dolpa district are still ignored by the government. Though it has hampered its development, it has kept the villages, vegetation and cultures untouched and untainted by modernity. There is no better place than Dolpa to peek and experience the typical ancient lifestyle of the villages in Nepal.
Furthermore, the enchanting and appealing views of landscapes, picturesque arid and dry lands, Himalayas and endangered species have made it more appealing to thrill-seeking trekkers. The upper Dolpo was brought to light because of Nepal’s deepest lake Shey Phoksundo lake and Shey Phoksundo National Park, the biggest national park in Nepal. The national park host some of the most exotic and endangered species like snow leopard, rare Himalayan blue sheep, goral, thar, Himalayan black bear etc. Moreover, the national park is famed for birdwatching, so you can also enjoy a birding experience during Upper Dolpo Trek.
The place is severely influenced by Tibetan culture so, we get to see many monasteries and gompas along the trails as well as Tibetan rituals and traditions. The most renowned monastery in the place is the crystal monastery on the lap of crystal mountain, clad with quartz and marine fossils. The pristine beautiful lake Shey Phoksundo allures thousands of trekkers and visitors every year so, the establishment of tea houses and lodges along the way is slowly gaining pace. Upper Dolpo Trek is a very long trek so, beginners may have difficulties completing it.
Similarly, the place was isolated and restricted till the 1980s but it is open to all trekkers and visitors presently but one may require a special permit to access the place. The trails traverse through the immense Himalayan peaks so, we may have to ascend some of the highest passes such as Kang La (5,380m, Saldang La (5,060m, Chharka La (5,015m), upper Sangda La (5,515m), lower Sangda La (5,035m). The views during the Upper Dolpo Trek from the top of these passes will blow our minds. Upper Dolp Trek is long trek, with a blend of nature, scenic captivating views, ancient culture and dry arid lands and hills. Although the Upper Dolpo Trek is longer than any other trek, the unique vistas of the high Himalayas perceived amid the trails and the unspoiled culture make it worth every penny.

Best trekked in the pre-monsoon window (March-May) or post-monsoon (October-December), when the high passes are clearest and most stable.
With multiple passes above 5,000 m, including Nangda La (5,350 m), the itinerary is built with steady acclimatization days around Shey Phoksundo and Saldang. Guides monitor for early signs of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and follow a strict descend-if-symptoms-worsen protocol.
Because Upper Dolpo is one of the most remote trekking regions in Nepal, we require travel insurance that explicitly covers helicopter evacuation, and our guides carry satellite communication devices to coordinate rescue from areas with no mobile network coverage.
All trekkers must carry travel insurance covering high-altitude trekking up to at least 5,500 m and helicopter evacuation, given the distances involved in reaching medical care from this restricted area.
Secure the Upper Dolpo Trek for 2026/2027 before the seat gets fully booked.
No. The Upper Dolpo Trek is a long and demanding expedition with steep, remote and sometimes risky trails. Much of the journey involves tented camping, basic food arrangements and exposure to cold conditions. For these reasons, it isn’t a suitable choice for most children.
You need to prepare for a long camping journey in remote mountain terrain. Warm clothing, suitable trekking equipment and personal supplies are particularly important because much of the route is away from established lodges and shops. Dry, portable food is also useful for the camping sections.
The supplied source does not provide enough information to give a reliable breakdown of additional costs. The final package should clearly state which camping supplies, food, accommodation, transportation and personal expenses are included before booking.
The trek should not be treated as a family-friendly itinerary. Its length, steep and risky trails, extended camping sections and cold conditions make it considerably more demanding than a standard lodge-based trek. Travellers considering the route should discuss their experience and physical condition with the trekking operator before booking.
The supplied source does not provide enough specific information about the best trekking season or seasonal weather conditions to give a reliable answer. This section should be updated from the current itinerary and route-specific information before publication.
The main concerns identified in the supplied material are steep and risky trails, prolonged exposure to cold conditions and the physical demands of a long camping expedition. Children are particularly vulnerable to cold-related problems, which is one reason the trek is not recommended for them.
The supplied FAQ does not provide current permit information or fees. Because Upper Dolpo involves restricted-area trekking, the permit section should be verified against the current government requirements before publishing specific permit names or prices.
The trek begins with guesthouse and lodge accommodation, but later sections require tented camping. Food also changes with the route: guesthouses and lodges provide fresh, locally available food, while during camping sections food must be carried with the trekking team. Dry food is useful because it is portable and practical for remote camping days.
The supplied material does not provide reliable information about mobile coverage, Wi-Fi or emergency communication. Specific connectivity claims should therefore be added only after verification against the current route and expedition logistics.
The supplied FAQ does not provide enough route-specific information about wildlife or individual natural landmarks to describe them accurately. This section should be expanded using verified details from the current Upper Dolpo itinerary rather than generic Himalayan wildlife claims.
