Best Time for the Upper Mustang Mountain Biking Tour

The best seasons are March to May and August to December. Upper Mustang lies in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, so it stays much drier than the rest of Nepal, even during the late monsoon.

Spring brings clear skies and mild days, and autumn offers the most stable weather and sharpest mountain views. From December, nights become very cold and snow can close higher routes, while strong afternoon winds blow up the Kali Gandaki valley all year, so we ride mostly in the mornings.

How Hard is the Upper Mustang Mountain Biking Tour?

This is a challenging tour for experienced mountain bikers. You ride remote jeep tracks and single trails at high altitude, with steep climbs such as Chele to Syangboche (about +800 m in a day), long descents and sections where you push or carry the bike.

You need strong cardiovascular fitness, confident off-road bike handling and the ability to ride several hours a day for many days in a row. Previous multi-day or high-altitude riding experience is strongly recommended.

Permits for Upper Mustang

Upper Mustang is a restricted area, so you need two permits, which we arrange for you through our licensed agency:

  • Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit (RAP): USD 50 per person per day (new rate effective 19 November 2025, replacing the old USD 500 for 10 days)
  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): NPR 3,000 per person for foreign nationals

Restricted-area permits are issued only through a licensed Nepali agency and require a licensed guide. Please send us a passport copy at least a week before departure so we can process them in time.

Your tour is led by an experienced, licensed, English-speaking mountain bike guide who knows the Upper Mustang trails and is trained in first-aid response. Guides carry a well-stocked medical kit, spare parts, and repair tools, and check the group's bikes and health every day.

Pre-Trip Briefing & Safety Protocols

Before the first ride from Jomsom, your guide fits and checks every bike and briefs the group on the route, riding technique on loose descents, and daily safety routines. The itinerary gains altitude gradually, symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) are checked daily, and on steep or loose sections we walk the bike rather than take unnecessary risks.

Emergency Response & Logistics

In the rare event of an injury, serious altitude sickness, or bad weather, our guides manage immediate first-aid and coordinate evacuation by road or, from remote areas, by helicopter. Direct communication lines are maintained with our Pokhara and Kathmandu office to ensure quick on-ground logistics and coordination with local emergency services if needed.

Participant Preparedness & Insurance

This is a demanding high-altitude ride, so participants should have strong fitness and off-road riding experience and inform us of any medical conditions beforehand. Comprehensive travel insurance covering high-altitude mountain biking, medical treatment and helicopter evacuation is always encouraged for total peace of mind.
