OVERVIEW & HIGHLIGHTS

More About Kali Gandaki Rafting

Adventure activities like paragliding from Sarangkot, the Zip Flyer, ultralight flights, bungee jumping in Pokhara, and white water rafting and kayaking on the Kali Gandaki River are some of the most popular sports for adventure seekers in the region. Most rafting in Pokhara departs for the Kali Gandaki, where you paddle between one of the deepest gorges in the world. It's the kind of trip that sticks with you. You'll get views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri while you're fighting through white water fed straight off the Himalayas, and along the way there are waterfalls dropping off the cliffs on either side of the gorge.

Opened in 1991, the Kali Gandaki River Rafting has become quite popular ever since. We begin our trip as we take a drive from Pokhara to Beni. This water adventure of Nepal Kali Gandaki lasts for two days, during which we experience the thrill of white water to the fullest.

Unlike Seti River Rafting, you go against higher levels of rapids. This makes rafting in Pokhara and kayaking in the Kali Gandaki river considerably more challenging. However, no danger will befall you, as our experienced team of experts will make sure of that. We welcome you to experience this thrilling adventure with us.

Kaligandaki River Rafting Highlights

  • The relishing adventure of paddling in between the deepest gorge of the world can be experienced nowhere but in the Kali Gandaki river of Nepal.

Day 1

Kali Gandaki River Rafting

Pokhara to Riverside Camp, 3 hrs drive and 5 hrs rafting.

At 7:30 in the morning, we will drive to Beni, which is about a 3-hour trip. Once there, we will unpack our gear, have some lunch, and load the rafts. Then, we will go through the safety briefing after which we board our rafts. After a short while, we will encounter two big rapids, which are called “Little Brother” and “Big Brother.” After the safety kayaks scout the rapid’s safety, we will follow them. The meeting of the Modi Khola marks the coming of our campsite. Here we will unload the rafts and relax. After that, we will have dinner and then sleep in our tents. [Night in a tented riverside camp with 5 hours of rafting] Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included.

Day 2

Rafting & Drive back to the Pokhara

You wake up to the peaceful sounds of running water. You’ll have hot tea or coffee as you enjoy the fresh air of the morning. Then we pack up our tents and load our gear before having breakfast. We spend five hours of the day among the waves before heading on to our night-time camping place. There we relax, have our dinner and sleep. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included.
As we continue downstream, the river cliffs narrow eerily above us and we enter a sombre canyon glistening with wet black rocks. You experience what can only be seen from the water, so drink it all in as we drift towards our take-out point. After lunch, we take the four-hour drive back to Pokhara.

Best Time for Kali Gandaki River Rafting

The best months are September to November and March to June. Autumn brings high water, powerful rapids and clear views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri; spring has warmer weather, lower water and pleasant beach camping.

Winter trips are possible but cold, especially at the riverside camps. During the peak monsoon (July to August) the Kali Gandaki is usually too high to run safely.

How Hard is Kali Gandaki Rafting?

The Kali Gandaki is a Class III+ to IV river with long, powerful rapids, more challenging than the Seti. Previous rafting experience is helpful but not essential if you are fit, confident in water and happy to paddle hard when your guide calls it.

Days start with a three-hour drive from Pokhara to the put-in near Beni, followed by several hours on the water each day and nights at riverside beach camps.

What to Wear & Bring for Kali Gandaki Rafting

  • Quick-dry shorts and a T-shirt or rash vest (no cotton jeans)
  • Sport sandals with straps, or old shoes that can get wet and stay on your feet
  • Swimwear, a towel and a full change of clothes for after the trip
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses with a strap and a cap
  • A small dry bag for valuables; cameras should go in the waterproof barrels provided
  • Any personal medication

For the overnight camp, also bring warm clothes for the evening, a headlamp or torch, and toiletries.

Safety Policy

Professional & Certified River Guides

Every Kali Gandaki trip is led by experienced, licensed, English-speaking river guides who are expert swimmers, trained in swiftwater rescue, river navigation, and first-aid response. Your guides carry well-stocked medical kits and ensure all participants are properly fitted with high-quality safety gear, including secure helmets, dependable life jackets, and self-bailing rafts, before hitting the water. Safety kayakers accompany the rafts through the bigger rapids, and overnight camps are set on high, safe beaches.

Pre-Trip Briefing & Safety Protocols

Before embarking on the rapids, every trip starts with a thorough safety briefing and a dedicated practice session right at the put-in point near Beni. Our guides cover essential paddling techniques, commands, and what to do in case of a swim, ensuring everyone feels completely confident and prepared to tackle the waves.

Emergency Response & Logistics

In the rare event of an injury or unexpected river emergency, our guides are equipped to manage immediate first-aid and coordinate swift evacuation support. Direct communication lines are maintained with our Pokhara and Kathmandu office to ensure quick on-ground logistics and coordination with local emergency services if needed.

Participant Preparedness & Insurance

While whitewater rafting is an incredible thrill, safety starts with personal readiness. We recommend that participants are comfortable in the water and inform us of any relevant medical conditions beforehand. Comprehensive travel insurance covering adventure sports and whitewater rafting is always encouraged for total peace of mind.
