Alternatively, you can choose the longer option of a tourist bus, which takes approximately 7-8 hours. Pokhara, renowned as one of Nepal's most exquisite cities, offers a splendid experience. Exploring and relishing the charming lakeside town nestled at the foot of the Annapurna Himalayas is the quintessential Pokhara experience.

Day 3

Pokhara to Ghandruk and Trek to Tadapani

HIGHEST ALT. 2,610 m | 8,563 ft
DURATION 3 - 4 hrs
Distance
DISTANCE 8 km

After breakfast at your hotel, we hop on our vehicle and drive towards Ghandruk 1,940 meters (6,365 feet). The scenic drive from Pokhara to Ghandruk takes about 2.5 hrs, and we pass through Nayapul, where the ACAP permit checkpost is located. After check-in, we drive towards Ghandruk. We stop at Ghandruk for a lunch break and explore the charming Ghandruk Village.

After our lunch, we start our trek toward Tadapani. The trail is filled with lush rhododendron and oak forests, with occasional clearings offering mesmerizing views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. The path from Ghandruk to Tadapai is nearly 8 km and takes about 3- 4 hrs of trekking; you will pass through the charming villages of Gurung and Magar settlements during this route. Overnight stay at Tadapani (2,610 m /8,563 ft).

Day 4

Trek from Tadapani to Dobato

HIGHEST ALT. 3350 m | 10,991 ft
DURATION 5 - 6 hrs
Distance
DISTANCE 12 km

We begin our day with a hearty breakfast before setting off towards Dobato. The trail consists of both ascents and descents, and within 30 minutes of descending and another 90 minutes of ascending, we arrive at Mesharu and Isharu. This vibrant stopover features a lovely teahouse where we'll enjoy lunch before continuing our trek to Dobato.

Covering a total distance of 12 km from Tadapani to Dobato, the trek takes approximately 5-6 hours to complete at an average pace. The second day of the Hidden Lake trek guides you through oak and rhododendron forests, providing opportunities to immerse yourself in the Annapurna region's culture.

Upon arriving in Dobato, you'll be treated to a stunning vantage point offering views of the Himalayas, encompassing the Annapurna to Dhaulagiri ranges. For those eager to take in even more of the snow-capped mountain scenery, a leisurely 30-minute walk from Dobato will lead you to the famed Mulde View Point. You'll spend the night in Dobato, resting and recounting the day's unforgettable experiences.

Day 5

Trek from Dobato to Pode Kharka

HIGHEST ALT. 4000 m | 13123 ft
DURATION 5 - 6 hrs
Distance
DISTANCE 12 km

On the third day of the Hidden Lake trek, we start our day early for sunrise at the Mulde View Point (3637). The views from Mulde, while the sun shines its first golden rays in the snow-capped mountains, make this moment otherworldly, forever captured in your heart and mind. After enjoying the sunrise, we hike back to Dobato, take our luggage and make our way towards Pode Kharka at an altitude of 4060m. The trail first descends and then ascends to Podekharka, covering a total distance of 12 kilometres and can be completed in 5 - 6 hrs.

The trail takes you along the path of some small landslide at first, and then the walk along the tracks made by carving on the hills gives you the ultimate thrill of adventure. This trek section is the sole reason we don’t recommend beginners to go for the Hidden Lake Trek. Moreover, even experienced hikers must be careful during this trek, as missteps may cause serious injuries. The emphasis on experienced guides during the Hidden Lake Trek can’t be explained enough, but we suggest you take the guide who has already been there. Finally, the cold breeze and the green scenery with Yaks & sheep indicate that we have reached Pode Kharka.

The total number of steps from Dobato to Pode Kharka is 18621 steps. (Steps counted on Phone during our expedition.)

Day 6

Pode Kharka to Hidden Lake, back to Pode Kharka, and Trek to Tiribung

HIGHEST ALT. 4380 m | 14370 ft
DURATION 7 - 8 hrs
Distance
DISTANCE 26 km

We start our day early and leave for Hidden Lake after breakfast; as we have a long day ahead, we will trek for 7-8 hrs today. The trail is through green scenery, and the distance is around 5km each way, making it 10km for the to and fro distance. Even Though the trekking distance is short, the absence of oxygen at the higher altitude will affect your body, and you will not be 100%. The trekking trails are among greenery, and a few sections are rocky paths with black rocks, and this section should be hiked with caution.

After 2-3 hrs of trekking, we reach the hidden lake at an altitude of 4380 m; rocky spots and greenery surround the lake. The most significant destination of our trekking journey, Hidden Lake welcomes you with its crystal clear water. It offers the majestic Annapurna South just before it, making the trek even more worth it.

As I mentioned earlier, you will now see that there isn’t any natural or artificial water source here. The lake itself is its natural water source. Furthermore, you can visit the temples of Baraha Devi, and if you trek during the JanaiPurnima, you can even witness the ritual the traditional Gurung community of this region has carried out till this day.

After enjoying the views of the Hidden Lake, we trek back to Pode Kharka, following the same route. The Yaks, the sheep, and their herders will accompany you during this trail. Moreover, medicinal herbs in this region greatly help villagers as they use them to treat their livestock and themselves. After 1 hour of trekking, we reach PodeKharka.

After having our lunch at Pode Kharka, we trek toward Tiribung. The flat path at the start of this route during the Hidden Lake trek is soon replaced by a sizeable downhill trail section. This section of the trail is also not suitable for beginners as during the steep downhill path; the foot placement must be perfect with good balance and control. After trekking for about 2.5 - 3 hrs all the way downhill, we reach the bank of Lidhur Chhidur Khola. While the river fills up during the summer season and crossing becomes difficult, the river dries up during other seasons and is easier to cross.
After we cross the river now, we go uphill to Tribung. We trek for about 2 hrs along the trees and forests and finally reach Tiribung; Tiribung is named so because the three villages of Chhomrong, Ghurjung, and Kimrong all meet up at a single point here. Overnight stay at Tiribung.

Day 7

Trek from Tiribung to Jhinu Danda/ Ghandruk and drive to Pokhara

HIGHEST ALT. 3430 m | 11254 ft
DURATION 5 - 6 hrs | 7 - 8 hrs (if you trek to Ghandruk)

On the final day of the Hidden Lake trek, we can take you to either Ghandruk or Jhinu Danda via Chhomrong. While some of you may like to go back to Ghandruk for an overnight stay, we can also manage that by changing the itinerary, as we are always flexible, so feel free to reach out to us.

The total trekking time from Tribung to Chhomrong is 4hrs. We trek from Tiribung all the way down to Chhomrong, first passing the clear section and then trekking through forests to Chhomrong. We have lunch at Chhomrong and trek to Jhinu Danda, famous for its natural hot springs. The hike from Chhomrong to Jhinu Danda takes 1.5 - 2hrs and is all the way down, with some straight sections surrounded by trees. After arriving at Jhinu Danda, you can take a quick dip in the natural hot springs of Jhinu Danda, washing all your fatigues. After a quick dip, we return to Pokhara. The scenic drive from Jhinu Danda to Pokhara takes about 2.5 - 3hrs.

However, if you would like to trek back to Ghandruk, the total time for hiking back to Ghandruk from Tiribung is 7-8 hrs, and we will ascent and descent all the way up to Ghandruk.

How Challenging Is the Hidden Lake Trek?

The Hidden Lake Trek is somewhat strenuous/challenging treks in the Annapurna region of Nepal. While beginners can easily overcome the steep ascents and descents, and even the altitude sickness can be prevented by acclimatization, the rocky sections and the walk along the ridgy valleys aren’t suggested for beginners. However, for the experienced/professional hikers, this trek offers some of the most spectacular views of the Annapurna range and a visit to the Hidden Lake.

Moreover, the Hidden Lake Trek takes you along the river path with rocky sections and edges; the steep downward section from Hidden Lake to Tribung isn’t for beginners. Furthermore, the area is remote, and Tea Houses aren’t available readily so, unlike other popular treks, you will need to reach the place of accommodation even if you are too tired. With difficulties and a lack of experience, this trek is not recommended for beginners.

Route Overview: Getting to Hidden Lake and Back

First day: The first section of the Hidden Lake Trek touches on the famous Ghandruk village as we travel to Ghandruk via Jeep and then Trek to Tadapani. The drive takes nearly 2 hr and 30 min with scenic views of the Modi River and traditional villages such as Birethanthi, Kilu and Syulibazar. After reaching Ghandruk Village, we enjoy the scenery and trek to Tadapani, where we stay overnight.

Second day: Trek to Dobato ( Muldei viewpoint)

Third day: Dobato to Pode Kharka.

Fourth day: Pode Kharka to Hidden Lake and trek to Tribung

Fifth day: During the final phase of the Hidden Lake Trek, we trek from Tribung Dada to Chhomrong/ Jhinu Dada and take a drive back to Pokhara with tales filled with adventure to share.

Best Season to Trek Hidden Lake

Selecting the ideal season for the Hidden Lake Trek mainly relies on your preferences and adventure tastes. Here, we break down each season's characteristics so that you can choose the best time to embark on your Hidden Lake Trek journey. Although the region is remote with a rugged terrain, the Hidden Lake Trek can be undertaken with ease during the peak trekking seasons of Autumn and Spring. Nevertheless, passionate trekkers still choose to venture on the Hidden Lake Trek in the off-seasons of Monsoon and Winter.

Spring (March to May)

Spring is the perfect season for experienced but laid-back trekkers. With minimal rainfall and clear skies, it presents breathtaking mountain views. Skilled trekkers can embark on this trek with a well-planned itinerary and the guidance of a seasoned professional. In Spring, high altitude snowfalls and the captivating appearance of the hidden lake add to the trek's allure. Daytime temperatures range between 3-9 degrees Celsius, dipping to -6 degrees Celsius at night.

Autumn (September to November)

Autumn is yet another idyllic time for Hidden Lake Trek. Throughout this period, trekkers can delight in warm days and cool nights in higher regions, while little to no rainfall creates a hassle-free experience for skilled hikers. After the Monsoon season washes away dirt and debris, the trek to Hidden Lake becomes even more pristine. Daytime temperatures during Autumn hover around 5-10 degrees Celsius, while nights can bring temperatures as low as -6 degrees Celsius.

Summer Season (June to August)

Summer beckons rainy days, with daily precipitation turning the paths muddy and riddled with leeches. An abundance of greenery, including wildflowers, herbs, and medicinal plants, speckle the valleys during this season. Although most trekkers avoid Summer, those who undertake the trip in this season find themselves amongst stunning landscapes unique to this time of year. Average daytime temperatures range from 8-15 degrees Celsius and can drop to 0 degrees Celsius at night.

Winter Season (December to Feburary)

Winter's cold, dry days with little to no rainfall make the experience significantly more challenging than Spring and Autumn. Extreme cold and snowfall increase the level of difficulty; snow may block certain sections of the route, so an experienced guide is essential.

This season's inherent risks come with great rewards, such as glistening snow-draped peaks and an opportunity to embrace the playfulness of the Himalayas' winter wonderland. During Winter, as the trail could be covered in snow, it's recommended to consult with local trekking agencies and experienced guides to determine the feasibility and safety of undertaking the Hidden Lake trek. Average daytime temperatures in Winter range between 2-6 degrees Celsius, dropping to -6 to -10 degrees Celsius during nighttime.

Permits for the Hidden Lake Trek (2026)

Permit 2026 Cost Where Issued
Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) NPR 3,000 (approximately USD 23) Nepal Tourism Board (Kathmandu or Pokhara) or ACAP Permit Counter

Total permit cost (2026): NPR 3,000 (approximately USD 23) per international trekker booking through a registered trekking agency.

Note: Permit fees are subject to revision by the Government of Nepal or the relevant authorities. When you trek with North Nepal Travel & Trek, we handle the permit application process, verify the required documents, and obtain all permits before your Hidden Lake Trek begins.

Accommodation & Meals on the Hidden Lake Trek

The Hidden Lake Trek combines traditional teahouses, community lodges, and simple mountain shelters as you travel deeper into the Annapurna Conservation Area. Lower villages provide comfortable lodge accommodation, while higher stops such as Pode Kharka offer more basic facilities due to their remote alpine location. Throughout the trek, you'll experience genuine Himalayan hospitality and freshly prepared local meals.

Accommodation

Accommodation typically includes:

  • Twin-sharing rooms with basic beds, mattresses, pillows, and blankets.
  • Shared bathrooms, with attached bathrooms available only in some lower villages.
  • Heated communal dining rooms where trekkers gather for meals and relaxation.
  • Solar or hydroelectric lighting in most lodges.

Electricity for charging phones, cameras, and power banks is available in many villages for an additional NPR 200–500 per device. Wi-Fi is available in some lower teahouses, but the connection becomes limited or unavailable as you approach Pode Kharka and the higher alpine sections of the trek.

Meals

Three freshly prepared meals are served daily:

  • Breakfast
  • Lunch
  • Dinner

Common menu options include:

  • Dal Bhat (rice, lentil soup, vegetables, and curry)
  • Fried rice
  • Noodles
  • Soups
  • Tibetan bread
  • Pasta and macaroni
  • Pancakes
  • Eggs
  • Tea, coffee, and hot lemon

Vegetarian meals are widely available throughout the trek and are often recommended because fresh vegetables are sourced locally while meat must be transported to remote villages. Vegan meals can usually be prepared with advance notice, although choices become more limited at higher elevations.

The teahouse experience is an important part of the Hidden Lake Trek, giving trekkers the opportunity to enjoy warm mountain hospitality, home-cooked food, and peaceful evenings in one of the Annapurna region's least-visited trekking destinations.

History & Religious Significance of Hidden Lake (Tridevi Tal)

Our team from North Nepal Treks explored the hidden lake on 23rd July 2022 along with the trekking trails, and we found fascinating insights about the Hidden Lake from the local people in the region.

Situated directly below the Annapurna South, Hidden Lake boasts natural scenery and mountain views alike. Moreover, it is hard for anyone to believe with just words(you need to see it to believe it), but Hidden Lake is unique as it doesn’t have any water sources, and the lake itself is its water source. Additionally, Hidden Lake is truly a supernatural existence and holds religious significance in the local community. “Tridevi Tal” is the sacred name of the hidden lake in the Nepali Language, and many locals worship here.

Talking a bit about history, Yak herders discovered the Hidden Lake many years ago, also known as dzopkyo in Nepal. The Yak Herders used to worship here long ago, which is continued till now.

Returning to the religious significance, the Hidden Lake hosts a Baraha Devi temple where people ask for a wish. When their wish gets fulfilled, they offer Maheli Devi (like Middle child, middle Devi) sacrifice of sheep. The puja/ceremony takes place in Janaipurnima, a festival of Hindus during the time of Autumn. All the locals sacrifice the sheep to the Devi, and they even claim that the blood of the worshipped sheep flows towards the upwards section of the Lake instead of going downwards.

Moreover, the trail that leads to the Hidden Lake is filled with more than 500 species of herbs, which include medicinal herbs such as Narmasi, Panchaaule, Banlasun, Marmal, and Kutki (consumed by patients with high blood pressure and diabetes) and many more.

The Hidden Lake is a place you must explore once in a lifetime, so to be mesmerized by the blend of unparalleled natural beauty and ancient Gurung tradition, contact us now.

Culture & Local Life Along the Hidden Lake Trail

The Hidden Lake Trek offers a unique opportunity to experience the traditional lifestyle of the Annapurna region while exploring one of its quieter and less-traveled trekking routes. Beyond the spectacular mountain scenery, the journey introduces you to welcoming villages, diverse ethnic communities, and authentic Himalayan hospitality.

Ethnic Communities Along the Route

The villages along the Hidden Lake Trek are primarily inhabited by Gurung and Magar communities, with smaller populations of Brahmin and Chhetri families in the lower settlements. The Gurung people are well known for their rich cultural heritage, Buddhist traditions, stone-built houses, and their long history of serving as Gurkha soldiers. The Magar community contributes vibrant folk traditions, farming practices, and warm hospitality that have shaped the culture of the Annapurna foothills for generations.

Villages You'll Visit

Depending on the itinerary, the trek passes through traditional villages such as Hemja, Ghachok, Hile Kharka, Korchon (Korcha), and other seasonal grazing settlements before reaching the peaceful Hidden Lake. These villages are surrounded by terraced fields, rhododendron forests, alpine meadows, and spectacular views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and the Annapurna range.

Traditional Food

Meals are freshly prepared in family-run lodges and community homestays using locally grown ingredients. Popular dishes include:

  • Dal Bhat (rice, lentils, vegetables, and curry)
  • Dhindo (millet or buckwheat porridge)
  • Gundruk soup (fermented leafy greens)
  • Tibetan bread
  • Fried rice and noodles
  • Potato curry
  • Homemade pickles (Achar)
  • Seasonal vegetables
  • Tea, coffee, and locally produced dairy products

Vegetarian meals are widely available throughout the trek.

Homestay & Community Experience

Accommodation is mainly in community lodges and local homestays, where trekkers stay with local families rather than large commercial hotels. This provides an authentic insight into everyday Himalayan life while directly supporting community-based tourism and local livelihoods.

Festivals & Local Traditions

If your trek coincides with local celebrations, you may experience Dashain, Tihar, Lhosar, and seasonal harvest festivals. Traditional Gurung and Magar dances, village gatherings, and cultural ceremonies provide a memorable glimpse into the customs that continue to define life in the Annapurna region.

Safety Policy

Professional & Certified Guides

Every trek to Hidden Lake is accompanied by a licensed, English-speaking local guide trained in remote-area navigation, wilderness first-aid, and off-the-beaten-path logistics. Since the trail beyond Dobato and Pode Kharka is far less trafficked than Nepal's popular routes, guides carry comprehensive medical kits and satellite communication devices to stay connected as you approach Hidden Lake at 4,380 m (14,370 ft).

Altitude & Remote-Terrain Management

The Hidden Lake Trek reaches a maximum altitude of 4,380 m (14,370 ft), with a demanding push from Pode Kharka to the lake and back in a single day. Itineraries are structured with gradual altitude gains and built-in acclimatization at Dobato and Pode Kharka. Guides conduct daily health checks for symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), and since teahouses are scarce above Dobato, descent plans are prepared in advance for every group.

Emergency Rescue Coordination

Because the Hidden Lake area sits well off the main trekking corridors of the Annapurna region, our guides carry satellite communication tools and coordinate directly with our Pokhara and Kathmandu offices in the event of severe injury, acute altitude illness, or sudden weather changes. Helicopter evacuation is arranged immediately upon assessment, with rescue coordinated from the nearest accessible landing point along the ridge.

Mandatory Travel Insurance

All trekkers must hold comprehensive travel insurance covering emergency medical treatment, high-altitude trekking up to 4,500 m, and emergency helicopter rescue/evacuation from remote terrain. Given the Hidden Lake Trek's limited teahouse infrastructure above Dobato, insurance details and permit documentation must be submitted prior to departure so rescue coordination can proceed without delay if required.
